How does IEEE Std 1547-2018 apply to energy storage distributed energy resources?

Abstract: Application of IEEE Std 1547-2018 to the interconnection of energy storage distributed energy resources (ES DER) to electric power systems (EPSs) is described in this guide. Along with examples of such interconnection, guidance on prudent and technically sound approaches to these interconnections is also given.

What is energy storage medium?

Batteries and the BMS are replaced by the “Energy Storage Medium”, to represent any storage technologies including the necessary energy conversion subsystem. The control hierarchy can be further generalized to include other storage systems or devices connected to the grid, illustrated in Figure 3-19.

Are energy storage systems viable and economically reasonable?

However, such storage systems become vi-able and economically reasonable only if the grids have to carry and distribute large amounts of vol-atile electricity from REs. The fi rst demonstration and pilot plants are currently under construction (e.g. in Europe).

How does a storage converter work?

The converter is managed by a controller which defi nes the set-points of the storage system. These set-points can be expressed as the magnitude of active and reactive power, P and Q.
