What is a micro-inverter vs a central inverter?

A micro-inverter is an inverter that pairs with a single solar panel to manage the DC-to-AC power inversion for that individual panel. The difference between a micro-inverter vs. a central inverter is that in micro-inverter systems, there is no centralized inverter. Instead, each panel is hooked up to its own micro-inverter.

What is a central inverter?

Central inverters, also called string inverters, connects solar (PV) panels in a string and convert the DC electricity into AC. A solar panel string is a group of wired panels in series connected to a single inverter. In general, an inverter can handle 7-12 panels in series on a particular string.

Are central inverters worth it?

Despite their benefits, central inverters have limitations: Shading Sensitivity: If just one solar panel in a central inverter system is shaded, even partially, it can reduce the output of the entire array by as much as 50%. This makes central inverters less ideal for roofs with shading issues.
