Which type of electrodes are used in a flow battery system?

Based on the electro-active materials used in the system, the more successful pair of electrodes are liquid/gas-metal and liquid-liquid electrode systems. The commercialized flow battery system Zn/Br falls under the liquid/gas-metal electrode pair category whereas All-Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) contains liquid-liquid electrodes.

What are the different types of flow batteries?

Over the past 20 years, four designs of flow batteries have been demonstrated: vanadium redox (VRB), zinc bromine (ZnBr), polysulphide bromide (PSB) and cerium zinc (CeZn). Major installations, in Japan and North American, use the vanadium redox and zinc bromine designs. Energy efficiency is about 85% for VRB system and 75% for ZnBr system.

What are the different types of redox flow batteries?

There are several more RFB systems currently under development, such as (i) aqueous inorganic pure flow batteries, (ii) aqueous organic redox flow batteries, (iii) pure flow membrane-less, and (iv) RFBs based on insoluble solid active materials. A summary is found in Sánchez-Díez et al. (2021).

What is a flow battery?

Flow batteries are a type of electrochemical ES, which consists of two chemical components dissolved in liquid separated by a membrane. Charging and discharging of batteries occur by ion transferring from one component to another component through the membrane. The biggest advantages of flow batteries are the capability of pack in large volumes.
