What is UPS battery testing?

UPS battery testing is governed by stringent standards to ensure consistency, reliability, and safety in battery performance assessments. One of the key standards is IEEE 1188, which focuses on valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries, commonly used in UPS systems.

What are the different types of UPS battery testing?

Battery maintenance and testing is crucial to the continued performance of a UPS system. There are a variety of common battery tests including impedance testing and discharge testing, more commonly known as load bank testing.

How often should a UPS battery be tested?

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recommends performing discharge testing at the time of installation, then repeating the test every year. The main drawback of load bank testing is that the UPS batteries must be taken out of service during the test.

When should a pre-configured Battery Cabinet be acceptance tested?

For example, pre-configured battery cabinets should be acceptance tested at the factory or upon initial installation. The purpose of an acceptance test is to confirm that the battery meets the specified discharge rate and duration. Some batteries are not fully formed until they have been in service for several months.
