Are solar cells a good investment?

Today’s solar cells – which are typically silicon-based – can convert an average of around 22% of the sunshine they absorb into power. More efficient solar cells mean each solar panel can generate more electricity, saving on materials and the land needed. Manufacturing silicon solar cells is also an energy-intensive process.

How efficient are solar panels?

The efficiency of commercially available PV panels averaged less than 10% in the mid-1980s, increased to around 15% by 2015, and is now approaching 25% for state-of-the art modules. Experimental PV cells and PV cells for niche markets, such as space satellites, have achieved nearly 50% efficiency.

How do solar panels work?

You're likely most familiar with PV, which is utilized in solar panels. When the sun shines onto a solar panel, energy from the sunlight is absorbed by the PV cells in the panel. This energy creates electrical charges that move in response to an internal electrical field in the cell, causing electricity to flow.
