How do you test a lead-acid battery?

To test the health of a lead-acid battery, you need to measure its voltage, perform a load test, and check the electrolyte’s specific gravity. These tests help determine whether the battery is still functional or needs replacement. A failing lead-acid battery can cause unexpected breakdowns, slow engine starts, and reduced power output.

How long should a lead acid battery be charged before testing?

Charge the battery fully at least 8 hours before testing it. Lead acid batteries recharge in various manners based on their function and manner of installation. For a lead acid vehicle battery, drive the vehicle around for at least 20 minutes. For a lead acid battery connected to solar panels, let the battery charge fully on a sunny day.

Can you test a lead acid battery with a hydrometer?

Checking an open-cell lead acid battery—that is, a lead acid battery with caps that can be opened to access the liquid inside—with a battery hydrometer is most accurate when the battery is fully charged. Closed-cell lead acid batteries without the access caps cannot be tested this way.

How do you test a flooded lead acid battery?

Fortunately, this is easy to do on flooded lead acid batteries. Most will have removable vent caps that allow you to use a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte, which will tell you the state of charge in each of the battery’s cells. Electrolyte specific gravity changes with the charge state of the battery.
